Castlethorpe - Dog Trainer Puppy Training Service Area

The village is relatively new compared to its surroundings, having begun as a castle belonging to the lord of the manor of Hanslope.  Castlethorpe was a settlement of servants and manual workers who grew up around the castle (thorpe is an Old Norse word for homestead, and it is not unreasonable to assume that there was a Danish settlement nearby as the area was near the Danelaw, if not part of it).  A feud between Foulkes de Brent – sent by King John – and William Mauduit, the castle’s owner, damaged the castle in 1215.  Mauduit allegedly rebelled against the king. Despite Mauduit’s return to claim his seat after the King’s death, the castle was demolished shortly thereafter.  Today, all that remains of the former Motte-and-Bailey castle are its grassy mounds.
The parish church of St Simon and St Jude dates back to Anglo-Saxon times, but the current building is of mostly Norman design. In about 1250, Bishop Grosteste changed the precedence between Castlethorpe and Hanslope. Castlelethorpe has grown up around the church and some traditional old stone cottages at the center of the village, which has been designated as a conservation area.
